Just my 2 cents...

If you help the community in the hard times the community will help in your times of need (figuratively speaking) and the value of the publicity and marketing from charitable donations and community projects is worth more than any banner or sign or Facebook campaign.

Helping those in need benifits organisations at a grass roots level all the way up to the top.

The value of being known as a community focused company goes way beyond any advertising campaign, one company that is doing it right for example is Boardriders Foundation, they advertise and market their projects and focus on how they are making the world a better place and these projects are a way to advertise and promote your brand in a way that gets people thinking about the brand in the best way possible without pushing their product and labels into your face.
